We Have a Serious Activist Problem
We Have a Serious Activist Problem
To be honest, we have had this problem for decades. the ease at which a person can simply start advocating on an issue online is both a blessing and a curse. People can get a message out fast, without overhead and gather like-minded individuals to a cause. Unfortunately, misinformed, bigoted and agenda-driven individuals can also do harm within an online activist community.
There has always been a seriously strong strain of bias against male survivors and literally anyone who experienced sexual violence at the hands of female perpetrators. Every time there is a new SV case with significant media coverage, they come back out of the woodwork to tell trauma survivors who is ALLOWED to speak and when.
To be absolutely clear, activists who tell male survivors that a woman couldn’t have raped them and that only men commit sexual violence are rape apologists. Full stop.
Do not trust them. Do not engage with them. They are a safety concern for vulnerable people who have experienced trauma. The risks of retraumatization with such “activists” are extremely high.
Treat them accordingly.
