Letter to Senators Warner, Kaine and Representative Beyer on JCPA

July 17, 2022

Dear Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine and Representative Don Beyer,

As your constituent, I am writing to urge you to take a stance against the Journalism Competition and Protection Act or JCPA (H.R. 1735 and S. 673). Creating a quasi-copyright in links and forcing companies to pay a tax on them is not the best way to address the problems facing news organizations. This approach threatens free expression and access to information for everyone.

I live in your state and district and have published online magazines related to civil liberties and interracial families since 1997. I don’t want or need to be paid for links. Why should the billionaires who own major corporations get this federally created loophole to the detriment of the rest of us? All it will do is stifle free speech and put more money in the hands of the uber wealthy who control the majority of the nation’s major news organizations. Don’t do that to the rest of us.

Please vote against the JCPA.

Sincerely,

James Landrith
