Calling it Rape is Progress

When I started doing advocacy work on female predators back in 2008, it was SOOOOOOOOOOOO RARE to see a woman’s sexual violence crimes described as rape in the media…or anywhere. Trained and credentialed victim advocates, therapists, and, of course, white feminists would often be in the ranks of those who objected to calling it rape when a woman was the perpetrator.

To see this headline on People’s website is progress. Some of you reading this posting are among those who pushed back initially, insisting that women cannot rape. I’m glad you turned around on that. Some others of you are still pushing that fucked narrative. Get your shit together kids. That’s enabling behavior.

An Ohio dance instructor is accused of repeatedly raping a student who was under the age of 13.

According to Trumbull County court records, Kaitlyn Wilkes, 19, of Vienna, is charged with 12 counts of rape and two counts of gross sexual imposition.

An official with the Trumbull County Sheriff’s Office tells PEOPLE Wilkes had been an instructor at a dance school where she’d previously been a student, and was fired after the accusations surfaced.
