Body Betrayal and Sexual Assault

#SAAM2020 A common way survivors are shamed is by focusing on their body’s response to sexual violence. Some things that I’ve had to accept:

  • The woman who raped me was aroused. She enjoyed what she did and took her time.
  • Her body’s arousal forced my body to respond which in turn aroused her more.
  • In flashbacks, I can still feel her weight and how she felt on top of me. I have to live with that.

Arousal means your organs functioned as designed, not that – you “wanted” it. Biology is not consent.
