Reflections on a Decade of Advocacy

After over a decade of work in sexual violence advocacy, I’ve accomplished much and accepted the ugliness:

  • Being dismissed by ideologues solely on the basis of gender, both mine and that of my perpetrator.
  • Almost always being the only man in the room, surrounded by people who resemble my perpetrator.
  • Near constant condescension about how I don’t really understand my own experiences with victim-shaming.

I got used to it, became a victim advocate, trained and mentored other victim advocates. I’m not nearly done.
