Empathy vs. Enabling

One of the more damaging aspects of non-trauma-informed new agey “counseling” techniques is the expectation that survivors must do emotional labor for abusers and victim-shamers, such as:

  • Forgiveness
  • Ignoring victim-shamers personally attacking them
  • Assuming shamers and blamers are simply acting out of their own trauma and expecting survivors to show them empathy, instead of taking step to defend themselves.

FFS, that is absolutely blaming the victim for being traumatized. When you expect more of survivors than you do of perpetrators and abusers, you are not competent. Period.
