(please forward to family and friends)

“INTER-GENERATIONAL FEATURE” MAVIN Issue #9

A fundamental part of building strong multiracial families is the ability to communicate across generations and appreciate the struggles and joys of those who have come before us while we work to build a better world for the future.

In MAVIN magazine’s issue nine, we will include a special inter-generational feature that will offer writers of different ages, sexual orientations, faiths, and ethnic backgrounds the opportunity to tell the story of a family member growing up in an era different from their own.

Some of the many possible stories we look forward to highlighting could include:

– sons and daughters describing how their parents confronted discrimination as interracial couples
– mothers or fathers explaining how having a multiracial child changed their own understanding of race
– adoptees reflecting on how learning about their biological parent(s) gave a new perspective on their adoptive parents.

Through these narratives, MAVIN seeks to encourage cross-generational dialogue and greater insight into multiracial experiences that span different generations. We hope to provide a forum for readers to recall a family member’s challenges and triumphs, and the way these special individuals have instilled an appreciation of their own mixed and adoptive identities.

If you are interested in contributing to this special feature, please contact issue editor, Mari Hayman at ari@mavinfoundation.org or call 206-622-7101 no later than Monday, September 6, 2004.

Sincerely,

Mari Hayman
