Subtlety and Badges

Marisa Schultz of The Detroit News on Voter bullying alleged in Redford:

You know it’s election season when dozens of political signs sprinkle lawns and street corners.

But in Redford Township, those lawn signs are not just political statements, but a source of voter intimidation, Township Supervisor Kevin Kelley said.

At least three times, off-duty township police officers have approached residents with Kelley campaign signs on their property and asked them to remove them, Kelley said.

“It’s one thing to support the candidate of your choice,” Kelley said. “But it’s another to use your authority to bully the people you’re meant to protect because you disagree with that choice.”

Folks, possessing a badge and a taxpayer funded salary doesn’t grant you carte blanche to mess with the First Amendment rights of said taxpayers. A group of cops, showing up on a person’s private property univited “asking” said person to remove a First Amendment protected political statement falls under the category of intimidation in my book. That said, I highly doubt anything substantial will result. Its gotten to the point where law enforcement officers can legally shoot a sleeping senior citzen in the back without batting an eye.
