One of the main people morally responsible for the mess in the Middle East, author Leon Uris, died several weeks back. The author pioneered a romantic and sanitized version of the founding of modern Israel in his novels. In doing so, he reinforced prejudices and misinformation that have influenced many Americans in evaluating the problems of the region today. Instead of being cast aside by age and greater understanding, his myths appear to resonate in the Iraq policy thinking of current Administration advisers and the President himself, and are manifest most particularly in the belief that somehow simply eliminating Arab dictators, as was done with Saddam in Iraq, is the simple one-step key to uprooting terrorism emanating from the area.
