Racial privacy initiative faces war
The Oakland Tribune
By Michelle Maitre
A coalition of elected officials and business, health and education organizations declared war Thursday on a voter initiative that would prohibit the state from collecting racial statistics.
"Today is the beginning of the end for Proposition 54," Rep. Barbara Lee, D-Oakland, told a cheering crowd of about 300 people at the rally on the steps of San Francisco City Hall.
Initiative supporters held signs with messages such as, "No on the information ban" and "We need information to 'Ward' off discrimination" — a dig at initiative proponent Ward Connerly.
