Groups vow to defeat initiative banning racial data collection

A coalition of education, civil rights and health care groups vowed Thursday to defeat an initiative banning the collection of racial and ethnic data in California with the help of the state's most powerful labor unions.

Longtime civil liberties lawyer Eva Patterson also called on the Democratic Party to give $1 million toward the effort.
