Trading Liberty for Security

Paul Rosenzweig of The Heritage Foundation on Balancing liberty and security:

…fears of a police state are overblown. We're merely witnessing a recurring pattern in American history. Professor Geoffrey Stone of the University of Chicago recently outlined some of this history in an address to the Supreme Court Historical Society, and what he said shows how the pendulum between liberty and security swings as circumstances change.

The glaring omission from his article is that since Oklahoma City, the rights taken have not been restored. Further, historical trends are just that trends. They aren't unwritten rules of how the universe works. Unlike in the past, Members of Congress and the Administration wish to keep major provisions of the PATRIOT Act from sunsetting despite public outcry.

Further, the Heritage Foundation has had little bad to say about anything regarding civil liberties infringements by the current Administration. No disrespect intended to Paul Rosenzweig, but I'll stick to listening to Cato, the Future of Freedom Foundation, the Independent Institute and the Free Congress Foundation for a more thorough examination of the topic.
