State Sponsored Patriotism

A California State Senator is once again trying to legislate patriotism:

Students in California are currently required to participate in a daily "patriotic exercise," which may include a moment of silence. But that is not enough, argues the highly decorated former U.S. Air Force test pilot and Vietnam veteran.

Last year, Knight proposed similar legislation, which was rejected by the Assembly Appropriations Committee because of the estimated $200,000 cost of notifying parents across the state of their right not to have their child participate.

"Maybe, just maybe, the Democrats will let this bill get to the governor's desk this year," Knight said. "The Pledge of Allegiance should be a part of every single school day in every single school. That is my goal."

Yep, that what's needed in schools today. Loyalty oaths, written by socialists. Who needs learning?

  1. The politician who’s trying to enact this legislation is California state Senator Pete Knight, and he’s just a real fucking piece of work. He once distributed a racist poem making fun of Latino immigrants. And a few years ago he became infamous for sponsoring an anti-gay initiative, even though his son is gay and his brother died of AIDS. From what I’ve read about him, I suspect he’s got some real personal issues which go beyond simply being just another far-right throwback to the days when the KKK kept everyone in their place. He sounds like a genuine sociopath.

A highly decorated Vietnam vet, eh? At least he’s not a chickenhawk — that’s just about the only non-negative thing I’ve gathered about him.
