CNN reporting on Two Marines charged with plotting to bomb base:
Lance Cpls. Richard Morrison, 21, and Richard Thomas Medders, 22, were arrested Saturday along with Janna Rebecca Lynn Smith, 27, and charged with criminal conspiracy to cause or risk a catastrophe, and making terrorist threats and bomb threats, Pennsylvania State Police said.
The three downloaded information from the Internet on making explosive devices and said they were going to use them at Camp Lejeune, police said.
I see a bad conduct discharge in their future. And tons of quality time with FBI and NCIS agents before their departure to a federal institution.
Camp Lejeune is a large base, but with few potential targets of great importance.
A few possibilities are:
- 2d FSSG headquarters (in which I've spent plenty of quality time picking up documents and tending to directives libraries), which is normally headed by a Brigadier General.
- 2d Marine Division headquarters, which is is currently headed up by MajGen John Sattler under whom I had the privilege of serving in the Navy-Marine Corps House of Representatives Liaison Office when he was a LtCol.
- Finally, there is the Marine Corps Base Commander, which happens to be another general officer billet.
I wonder what these brain surgeons were planning to blow up. Blowing up a random bachelor enlisted quarters (BEQ) building or the PX would have pissed folks off, but would hardly have been a lasting or terrifying statement. Where they after a political statement or are they just random idiots with too much time on their hands? My money is on the random idiots theory. Which means that they would have likely blown up a BEQ. Probably their own BEQ.
Aside from the General Officers I mentioned at 2d FSSG, 2d MarDiv and Base, there are few targets of great importance. Of course, I'm assuming that you're already ignoring the rumored nuclear missile silos that everyone whispers about but can't confirm or deny their presence.
