In a new joint report, entitled “Blood Pressure” issued by Project RACE and The Multiracial Activist, OMB’s plans for tabulating multiple responses to the race question on the census are revealed. The OMB report, entitled “Draft Provisional Guidance on the Implementation of the 1997 Standards for Federal Data on Race and Ethnicity”, is a thinly veiled attempt to reintroduce Jim Crow ideology into the racial classification process.

After years of deliberation and many Congressional hearings, the “check all that apply” scheme was adopted for multiracial and biracial individuals in order to accommodate their multiple racial heritages. Supposedly, mixed-race individuals would no longer be told to choose one racial heritage over another when completing government forms that collected racial data or be left only with the choice “other”. OMB’s draft report, issued February 17, will nullify any count of multiracials by collapsing all multiple responses back into the largest non-white category marked. OMB is also suggesting the addition of a category marked “Some Other Race”. Sounds kind of familiar. We feel that at best, this is dishonest, and at worst racist. The report follows this press release and is also available online at the following urls:
