Alexandria, VA — In response to the Fairfax County School Board's brave stance against the unreasonable testing requirements included in the No Child Left Behind regulations, the federal government has called upon the Commonwealth to take corrective action, according to a February 1 Washington Post story.

According to a story posted on the website of The Connection Newspapers on February 8th, the Department of Education has tasked the Commonwealth of Virginia with taking action against Fairfax County within two weeks.

2007 At-Large School Board candidate James Landrith, had this to say in response on February 9th, "The No Child Left Behind Act is a threat to County sovereignty with regard to our right to determine and execute educational policy and oversight in accordance with local considerations. Further, it interferes in County affairs in a manner not supported or mandated by the Constitution."

In addition, Landrith supports the Board's decision and said, "I applaud the members of our School Board who bravely voted to defy this unnecessary and premature testing requirement. This massive, unfunded mandate known as No Child Left Behind must be allowed to expire and I call on the Board to remain steadfast in it's defiance of aspects of the law that violate their beliefs and policies. Fairfax County can manage its own schools without federal nanny-state interference."
