Street Closings In DC

For those of you working or living in the District, I’ve published the following information (from a coworker) on this week’s street closings and traffic alterations in conjuction with various protests and marches:


The DC Police are preparing for the IMF/World Bank protestors this weekend and the March for Women’s Lives on Sunday. Following is the latest information received from the DC Police regarding street closings this weekend.

IMF/World Bank Related Info for Friday through Sunday:

The Police Department will close streets and restrict parking in and around the IMF and World Bank buildings and streets along possible protest routes. It is possible that after the evening rush hour today, April 22nd, 19th Street, NW from Pennsylvania Avenue to G Street, may be closed if protests or rallies require such action. Parking will be restricted and vehicular traffic will be prohibited on the following streets between 11:00 p.m. tomorrow (Friday, April 23rd) and 6:00 a.m. on Monday, April 26th:

  • 17th Street, NW from I Street to New York Avenue, NW
  • 18th Street, NW from I Street to F Street, NW
  • 19th Street, NW from I Street to F Street, NW
  • 20th Street, NW from Pennsylvania Avenue to F Street, NW
  • G Street, NW from 17th Street to 21st Street, NW
  • H Street, NW from Connecticut Avenue to 21st Street, NW
  • Pennsylvania Avenue from 17th Street to 20th Street, NW

 
The department may be required to close side streets during any marches. This may cause possible disruptions to traffic. Motorists and pedestrians may wish to avoid the aforementioned areas during the planned protests and rallies. The department will attempt to keep the public informed with the assistance of the news media.

March for Women’s Lives Related Info for Sunday
On Sunday, April 25, 2004, the Feminist Majority will hold a large rally and march. Participants will rally on the National Mall between 3rd Street and 14th Street, NW at 10 am. Starting at about 12 noon, the participants will march north on 15th Street to Constitution Avenue, NW; west to 17th Street, NW, north on 17th Street, then east onto the Ellipse at C Street, NW to 15th Street, north on Pennsylvania Avenue to 7th Street, and south on 7th Street back to the rallying point on the National Mall. The rally will continue until approximately 7 pm, with speakers utilizing an event stage located near 3rd Street on the Mall. The following streets will be closed to vehicular traffic from 11:30 am until approximately 4:30 pm on April 25:

  • 7th Street, between Independence Avenue, SW and E Street, NW
  • 9th Street, between Constitution Avenue and E Street, NW
  • 10th Street, between Constitution Avenue, NW and E Street, NW
  • 11th Street, between Pennsylvania Avenue, NW and E Street, NW
  • 12th Street, between Independence Avenue, NW and E Street, NW
  • 13th Street, between Pennsylvania Avenue, NW and E Street, NW
  • 14th Street, between Independence Avenue, SW and F Street, NW
  • 15th Street, between Independence Avenue, SW and F Street, NW
  • 17th Street, between Independence Avenue, SW and E Street, NW
  • Constitution Avenue, from 3rd Street to 23rd Street, NW
  • Pennsylvania Avenue, from 3rd Street to 15th Street, NW
  • The 9th and 12th Street tunnels, crossing Constitution Avenue, NW
  • Inbound 14th Street from 395 north, both HOV and non-HOV lanes will be diverted to the eastbound SE/SW Freeway
  • The 12th Street tunnel in both the eastbound and westbound direction of the SE/SW Freeway

Additionally, the following streets crossing the National Mall may be closed for safety reasons from 9:30 am until 10 pm on April 25:

  • 4th Street, between Independence and Constitution Avenues, NW
  • 7th Street, between Independence and Constitution Avenues, NW

It must be noted that the size of this demonstration may cause unexpected delays due to possible disruptions of traffic flow. Motorists and pedestrians may wish to avoid the aforementioned areas. The Metropolitan Police Department will attempt to keep the public informed with the assistance of the news media.
