Misinformation About Male Survivors

Excerpt from my presentation on Male Survivors of Sexual Violence: My Story and How to Help (1 CEU hour):

As both a male survivor and a trained advocate with thousands of hours of experience, I’ve learned that much online advocacy regarding male survivors is lacking in competency and empathy. Some of it is downright disinformation:

  • Pay attention to biases from online sources.
  • Much sexual violence activism trivializes, minimizes, or mocks male victims.
  • Activists are not necessarily competent advocates.
  • Ideology =/= trauma-informed reality.

Be aware that in some activist spaces, you may be retraumatized by incompetent activists with no real advocacy training. Help is available via rainn.org, 1in6.org, and malesurvivor.org.
