Building Rapport with Male Survivors

Excerpt from my presentation on Male Survivors of Sexual Violence: My Story and How to Help (1 CEU hour):

Competent communication skills are important:

  • Mirror their language when appropriate.
  • May describe incidents as “something happened”, rather than using terminology such as “sexual assault”, “rape” or “molestation”.
  • Often shy away from identifying as a “victim” or “survivor”.
  • Avoid “therapy voice” and speak more plainly.
