I received a request for an interview from a high school student, writing for their school newspaper. This isn’t the first time I’ve consented to an interview for a school newspaper or a term paper project in the 18 years I’ve been publishing and writing online.
I always feel nervous talking to high school students. I want to ensure they get what they need for their project or article, without overwhelming them at that age. When I consent to an interview, I assume some responsibility for ensuring that young mind has been properly informed. I also want to be sure that what I contribute can be backed up and fact-checked easily. I am not comfortable potentially contributing to some kid’s bad grade. The line is blurry.
As an aside, some of these high school writers have occasionally covered male survivor issues better than professional journalists.
This kid asked intelligent and relevant questions. So long as he can write, he should be fine.
I have to carefully balance the Dad, activist and former teacher parts of me some times. They all exist simultaneously. 🙂
