Amy Joyce of The Washington Post on Free Expression Can Be Costly When Bloggers Bad-Mouth Jobs:
There are 8 million personal Web logs — or blogs — in the United States, according to the Pew Internet & American Life Project. People write blogs to talk about their day, family outings, dates gone awry and, of course, work. But what might feel like a very personal entry about a dismal workday can mean something quite different to a boss who needs only a search engine to read it.
Blogging and work can be a bit strange. I've never blogged about my employer directly, but I am aware that several coworkers read my blog (via site activity reports by IP address).
You never know who is reading. According to my Sitemeter, I get Googled several times daily which brings in new readers to the website. Sometimes it is just people looking for something I said in a commentary or an old friend, classmate or cousin looking to reconnect. Other times I'm left wondering who and why.
It can sometimes suck, but you have to be careful what you commit to display in cyberspace. You just never know who is looking and some fences just can't be mended.
