As the Administration prepares to instigate Iran into open war and the "moral" police prepare to inflict the rest of us with their special brand of "ethics," perhaps we should revisit End-Timers and Neo-Cons: The End of Conservatives by Paul Craig Roberts (republished on January 19, 2005 in ZNet):
I remember when friends would excitedly telephone to report that Rush Limbaugh or G. Gordon Liddy had just read one of my syndicated columns over the air. That was before I became a critic of the US invasion of Iraq, the Bush administration, and the neoconservative ideologues who have seized control of the US government.
America has blundered into a needless and dangerous war, and fully half of the country's population is enthusiastic. Many Christians think that war in the Middle East signals "end times" and that they are about to be wafted up to heaven. Many patriots think that, finally, America is standing up for itself and demonstrating its righteous might. Conservatives are taking out their Vietnam frustrations on Iraqis. Karl Rove is wrapping Bush in the protective cloak of war leader. The military-industrial complex is drooling over the profits of war. And neoconservatives are laying the groundwork for Israeli territorial expansion.
More unnecessary wars are on the horizon and more attacks on the Bill of Rights are in the works. This bunch of liars and murderers have barely begun to wreak their full havoc:
As a civil libertarian, who doesn’t believe in trading liberty for a false sense of security, I fear for our freedoms.
As an American who pledged an oath to Support and Defend the Constitution, I fear what these traitors in pinstripes will do to that Constitution with the yoke of re-election lifted from their shoulders.
As a veteran, I fear how easily those who never served, refused to serve, or had “other priorities” will seek to spread their unnecessary, interventionist war from Iraq across the Middle East.
As a person who views humanity as a clump of INDIVIDUALS, I fear what these collectivists and bigots in the Administration and Congress will attempt do to other Middle Eastern nations in response to the crimes of Al Qaeda and the House of Saud.
As a father, I fear what price my children will have to pay tomorrow for crimes being committed today.
As a human being, I weep for my brothers and sisters who find themselves in the way of the greedy profiteer, the zealot on a mission, or the angry vigilante feeling empowered and claiming a “mandate.”
