Michael McDonough of The Associated Press on Attack on U.S. Base in Iraq Kills 22:
Rockets and mortar rounds struck a U.S. base in the northern city of Mosul on Tuesday, killing at least 22 people and wounding 50, a Pentagon official said. The attack came the same day that British Prime Minister Tony Blair made a surprise visit to Baghdad and described the ongoing violence in Iraq as a "battle between democracy and terror."
The attack, which occurred about noon (4 a.m. EST) was believed to have struck a dining hall at the base, the official said.
The forward operating base is used by both Iraqi and U.S. troops, and the identities of the casualties were not known, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED. Right, Mr. President?
