Dear Senators Warner and Allen and Representative Moran:
I am writing to urge you to vote ‘no’ on raising the United States’ debt ceiling until the Bush administration presents a concrete plan to lower the deficit. A vote to increase the borrowing limit is simply another blank check that will be filled in later at immense cost.
Never in the history of the nation has a huge surplus turned into a huge deficit so fast. Since taking office, the Bush administration has already raised the debt ceiling by $2.1 trillion. In yet another election year maneuver, they refused to even ask for another increase until after the election.
Without the Bush administration’s invasion and occupation of Iraq and reckless tax cuts for the richest Americans, there would be no need to increase the borrowing limit.
Congress should simply vote ‘no’ to this financial chicanery absent a concrete plan to reverse the most egregious tax cuts and to exit Iraq.
This is a rare opportunity for members of both parties who believe in fiscal responsibility to come together even if they differ on individual policies. Congress should face up to the high cost of tax cuts and occupation, and tell the administration enough is enough.
Please let me know how you intend to proceed on this issue.
Sincerely,
James Landrith
