Dear Senators Warner and Allen and Representative Moran:
As your constituent and a military veteran, I urge you to support S. 2845, the bipartisan Senate-passed measure endorsed by the 9/11 Commission that takes important steps to enhance our security. I urge you to reject H.R. 10 that includes onerous restrictions on immigrants that will not make us safer; rather, these restrictions will make immigrant communities feel besieged and will make our immigration processes even more dysfunctional than they are today.
The partisan H.R. 10 includes an array of anti-immigrant provisions that go well beyond the 9/11 Commission’s recommendations. In fact, the Commission unsuccessfully petitioned House Republican leadership to delete these troubling provisions from the bill. They include: (1) a broad expansion of expedited removal, (2) heightened burdens for asylum eligibility, (3) a prohibition on acceptance of consular identifications, (4) restrictions on driver’s license issuance to noncitizens based on immigration status, (5) elimination of habeas review for a variety of final removal orders, (6) new mandatory detention provisions, (7) elimination of temporary stays pending judicial review of removal orders, and (8) authorization to remove individuals to countries without functioning governments.
Thank you for your consideration of this important matter.
Sincerely,
James Landrith
