Emily Berg of the Victorville Daily Press on Educators confused over Prop. 54:
Checking race and ethnic background boxes on government forms could come to an end in California.
On the Oct. 7 recall ballot, voters will have the opportunity to oust government classification by race in areas of public education, public employment, public contracts and other government operations with the state.
Proposition 54 offers some exceptions for medical research, law enforcement and federal mandates. Educators said it could keep them from collecting data on how well the different ethnic groups perform in some subjects.
