From MSNBC Breaking News:
Major power outages are reported in major U.S. and Canadian cities, including New York City, New Jersey, Toronto and Detroit.
I know that many Western states share the same power systems and outages out west can affect multiple states at once. Is the Northeast in the same boat? This is not my area of expertise. Any of my five readers have an idea?
UPDATE: Here's my answer, courtesy of The San Diego Union-Tribune:
The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission said the massive outage was not caused by a terror attack. The outage was caused by a failure at a Manhattan power plant which destabilized the power grid as far as Canada, FERC spokesman Bryan Lee said.
At least they are not suffering in 110-degree heat like the Iraqis who have no power thanks to our bombing campaign.
We don’t realize how much we take electricity for granted until we don’t have it, then we notice it for sure.
I lucked out – I was without electricity for one night. And that was long enough! I’m near the city of Detroit.
At least I learned one thing through this experience – I am truly spoiled! My parents were telling me stories of how they grew up without any type of central cooling system. One night without my fan and air conditioning, and I was unhappy.
I was also dumb enough to wait in line for gas. One hour. But in my defense, I really had no choice. My sister needed the gas for my Mom’s car. She had to leave her home because an oil refinery caught fire two blocks from her house. But all is clear now.
