Ward Connerly, a regent of the University of California's statewide system of higher education, is a remarkable man. A black man married to a white woman, he believes, consistent with the founding principles of the United States of America, that one's race or gender matters less than one's character and qualifications. More than any other person, Connerly contributed to the passage of Proposition 209 in 1996, which banned racial and gender discrimination by the State of California and all its subdivisions.
