The door-knocking, ad-blaring, phone-polling politicos are descending early this year. And it's not just about Gov. Gray Davis.

Secretary of State Kevin Shelley this week assigned proposition numbers for the Oct. 7 ballot, firing the gun on the official debate over one of California's most testy, seat-shifting subjects: Race. This time it's Ward Connerly's so-called Racial Privacy Initiative – now officially named Proposition 54, or the Classification by Race, Ethnicity or National Origin initiative.

The constitutional amendment would largely eliminate the collection and use of racial and ethnic information by state, local governments, and public schools and universities for purposes such as classifying students, contractors or employees.
