Libertarian on Active Duty

I received this nice email today from a senior Air Force Staff NCO. I’ve removed the name to protect this individual’s privacy:

James, I’m in the process of joining the Libertarian Party myself (got fed up with some things that go on within the military). I read some of your posts on MCO– I don’t think either major party does too much good for us.

Anyway, I hope your postings result in more GI’s becoming interested in the Libertarian Party

Since about February, I’ve been considering forming some kind of ad hoc coalition of military veterans and active duty/reserve libertarians. A Libertarians Who’ve Served Auxiliary of sorts. The goal of such a coalition would be:

  • To provide a voice (through public statements, press releases, op-eds, etc.) for those who’ve served and agree with the libertarian concept of non-aggression, instead of letting the chickenhawks and neo-cons continue to dominate the national debate on issues related to military service and war.
  • To provide support and a ’safe haven’ for those currently serving on active duty in an atmosphere that is sometimes hostile towards those who don’t subscribe to the unofficial military political ideology.
  • Possible actions items would include recent public discussion of reinstituting conscription, military tribunals, and of course, military interventionism.

Any interest? I don’t want to kick this off alone, so I’d like to find at least two other motivated libertarian veterans interested in brainstorming this concept further. Email me or post your comments to this entry if you are interested.
