The board of Veterans for Common Sense have issued a letter to the President today regarding the contradiction in issuing a Congressional proclamation in support of the troops while simultaneously slashing the VA budget that treats the casualties that will result from this unnecessary war:
Our nation’s servicemen and women are now engaged in a new war – Gulf War II. As veterans of Gulf War I, we are very concerned about proposed budget cuts harming our troops and our veterans. These actions contradict Administration claims to "Support Our Troops."
Specifically, the House Budget Committee voted to cut $25 billion from the Department of Veterans Affairs’ budget over the next ten years. This will slash healthcare and benefits for disabled veterans and beneficiaries, and significantly reduce VA’s ability to care for casualties resulting from Gulf War II.
Empty resolutions mean nothing and are an insult to those of us who sacrificed in 1991 and to those who are sacrificing in 2003 when the same sorry bunch then decide to turn their backs on the veterans after they transition back to the homeland. Veterans for Common Sense will be compiling a "Hall of Shame" listing the names of those who voted to slash VA funding but voted in favor of the "support of President and troops" resolution. May God have mercy on their pitiful souls.
