Karen Abbott of the Rocky Mountain News on Big names top list of names that might be in spy files:
A former senator, a nationally known comedian, several high-profile Native American activists and distinguished anti-violence groups are among those who might have been swept up in inappropriate police intelligence gathering, according to the American Civil Liberties Union.
The ACLU list includes former South Dakota Sen. James Abourezk, who once headed the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs; entertainer George Carlin; Wilma Mankiller, who was awarded the Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor, in 1998 for her work as the principal chief of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma; and historian Vine Deloria, who wrote Custer Died for Your Sins.
George Carlin and Wilma Mankiller being tracked by the Denver PD as possible extremists? I've said it before, if I was a cop on this department I'd move and start over. This is some pretty embarrassing shit and I wouldn't want my name associated with it.
