Letter to Editor of INTERRACIAL VOICE
June 16, 1997
This is in response to the June 15 submission by Lekbrown@aol.com.
I am the father of two multiracial sons, (black, white, Native American) and I expect anyone who says that they are and should identify as black to take out their check books and start writing child support checks, because that is the only damn way that it is going to happen.
I was not aware that the multiracial movement was disrespecting the NAACP and other “civil rights groups”. If disrespecting means that we won’t roll over and play dead while they decide who our parents really are, then I guess we are disrespecting them. We want to be allowed the right to self-identification for ourselves and/or our children. We want to stop being asked, on forms and in REALITY to chose which parent we like best. This is entirely based on genealogy and not in any way based on culture, social status, pigmentation or REALITY.
As far as RESPECT is concerned, that is earned. It can also be lost. I personally lost RESPECT for many “civil rights groups” after I became involved with the multiracial movement. Those organizations made a decision, on their own, to oppose and persecute (in some instances, as was evident at the recent Congressional hearing) multiracial individuals.
Oh yeah, as far as my race goes, I am human, and that is NOT a BAD thing.
