PEORIA (UPI) Robert Jackson, 49, a candidate for the unexpired term of the late Peoria County Sheriff Bernard Kennedy, was shot to death Monday night while acting as a security guard at a supermarket.
Police mounted a search for the gunman whom they believe may have been a teen-ager. They said the gunman shot Jackson at the Red Fox store, a supermarket on Peoria’s South Side, and then apparently fled into the Harrison Homes, a nearby housing project.
Jackson was shot in the head about 8 p.m. with a .22 caliber pistol. He died a short time later at St. Francis Hospital.
A part-time security guard, Jackson had been in the Peoria County Sheriff’s Department for 18 years.
