Flag Desecration Attack on First Amendment

Yesterday, along with over 1000 other veterans via Veterans for Common Sense, I co-signed a letter to the Congress (pdf) in opposition to H.J. Res. 10, which would turn free speech on its head by making flag desecration a federal crime.

Since I am aware that the occasional neo-con or other such vile creature may sometimes read this blog, let me be clear: I personally find flagburning and other such defacements distasteful and don't engage in such activities myself, but as a libertarian and proponent of free speech, I firmly believe it should not be a crime. Such activities have long been part of our national culture of free speech and dissidence. As a veteran, I swore an oath to support and defend the Constitution from all enemies, foreign AND domestic. Those individuals and organizations behind this proposed amendment (which thumbs its collective nose at the First Amendment) are domestic enemies of the Constitution.
