Saturn in Opposition

On December 31, 2003, Saturn will be in “opposition.” This term refers to the planet’s position in our sky in relation to the sun. Simply put, the Earth will pass between Saturn and the sun at this time. As the sun sets, Saturn will rise in the East.

Once Saturn achieves opposition, the second largest planet in the solar system will be approximately 800 million miles from Earth. This should allow casual observers the best view of the sixth planet from the sun in thirty years.

Excellent.
